On the Right Track in Scotland
The investment made in new production plant at our Clay Cross facility brought rewards with the ability to thread a substantial amount of steel tube supplied by Murray International Metals (MIM) for drill casing for use on the Network Rail Dolphingstone Realignment project in East Lothian, Scotland. The ground stabilization project became necessary when old mine workings started to collapse.
The new 16″ CNC machine was able to supplement the capacity at our factory, and satisfy the demand for 9 5/8″ Drill Casing. The contract was an Edmund Nuttall/Ritchies Equipment JV and the permanent casing is being used for minipiling, to ensure the stability and safety of the foundations for the new railway track.
Please note that casing that is to be left permanently in the ground can be supplied by Colcrete Eurodrill at very attractive prices.
The project involved three pile slabs being constructed along the new rail route. The casings were drilled in to the ground and through the mine workings. The casings were filled with grout and had a single central reinforcing bar.
Permanent steel casings were chosen as they had to
penetrate the old mine workings. Grouting and piling work was undertaken by Ritchies, Keller Ground Engineering and Cementation Foundations Skanska. Over 6,000 holes were drilled
Jim Shields, Geotechnical Manager for Ritchies Equipment was happy with the equipment supplied by Colcrete Eurodrill. “The casings gave us no problem at all” he remarked.
Keller Ground Engineering installed approximately 8,000 metres of minipiles using the permanent casing on their part of the contract. Grouting equipment manufactured by Colcrete Eurodrill was also in use on the site.
MIM supplied the lion share of the steel tube for this project, and they were happy with the performance from Colcrete Eurodrill. Alistair Cochrane, who enlisted Colcrete Eurodrill as sub contractor to thread the pipes for MIM said, “Colcrete Eurodrill responded quickly to our requirements, and the quality of the work they did for us was second to none.”
